Vocal Warm-ups

 Importance of warming up

It is very important to put my best voice forward and reach all my vocal limits in order to attain maximum effect from the audience. It is important to understand the a singing voice is apart of ones appearance and facial expressions. Effective verbal articulation depends on not only what I say but how I sound.
When a person speaks they make a sound in their Larynx also known as a voice box.The voice box makes a sound with the vocal folds which our soft tissue folds that consist of muscle, ligament and mucous membrane. This suggest that the same way in which you would run and do sports a healthy warm up is a good way to improve your performance and prevent injury. This is the same for singing,
warming up the muscles in your voice improve your performance decreasing the likelihood of injury and strain to my voice .

Exercises

The warm ups in lesson include tongue twisters to help with articulation while singing and to warm up the muscles in the mouth. For example one tongue twister 'She sell sea shells on the sea shore".
Other warm ups were to help with range and tension in the neck and shoulders.
These our some of the practice routines we were introduced too by a few students in the class :

Juan
Cheek massage with fingertips
Add a lip roll
to relax facial muscles

Priyana
tongue twister
'Mummy made me mush my M&Ms' using a half octave scale (ascending and descending).

Annie
tongue twister
'Betty brought some butter but the butter Betty brought was bitter so Betty brought some better butter than the butter Betty brought before.'

Nerissa
'Every time I get the opportunity to warm up my voice I'm going to warm it up, warm it up (x2)
You're going to hear me sing 'ye-ah' 'ye-ah' 'ye-ah' 'ye-ah'

Elyna
Tongue twister: 'She sat upon the balcony inexplicably mimicking him hiccupping and welcoming him in.'

Jeremy
mmmm (chew)  < change on clap que> wah wah wah (tongue out)

Salma
Stretch mouth  - like a feast

Tayla
'Down the road I go' Start in the middle of your range and work down.

Practice Vocal Routine :
  • bella mama
  • goose 1- 5
  • lip rolls
  • vowels including strange facial expressions
  • Scale
  • arpeggios
This practice vocal routine is an effective strategy for technical vocal improvement as it helps with articulation and expanding your vocal range. For example the the first two of the vocal routine 'Bella mama'  and 'Goose' help with range because your singing the same thing but the notes get higher until you everyones reached their limit before voices start straining. Furthermore the vowel sound are affective because your just singing the  sounds   A - O - E - U - I, but using facial expressions to warm up the muscles in the face making strange facial expressions helping you to attain effective verbal communication improving the way i sound.
